CNN I-Report - Be A Citizen Journalist With Your Mobile Phone
With the proliferation of camera phones in Japan, it’s a natural way of life when something out of the ordinary happens, everyone “flips open” their camera ready keitai (mobile phone) faster than a Jesse James shoot-out. So, if the news is REALLY big (and I’m thinking something of a magnitude of an earthquake or tsunami), where should all these Citizen Journalists send their media? To CNN!
CNN has set up a relatively new service called I-Report which will allow anyone with a keitai to easily shoot and send stories to CNN. The service will accept video (up to 30mb), pictures (up to 1mb) and audio clips (up to 1mb). Uploads can also be done from the web which is co-hosted by Blip.tv - though not really as cool and timely as being sent at that very moment from the spot!
Here are some points I think anyone should consider before sending in their “Citizen Journalist” piece. Make sure you give a catchy title for the clip in the subject of your e-mail message (eg. “First video of Japan Earthquake!”) and to include your name and phone number in the body of the message to make sure they can get back to you, other than by e-mail. Also remember if you send in a clip and it really isn’t obvious what the media piece is about, it may help the editors to put a sentence or too explaining why you thought this would be of interest to them.
ShoZu, an uploading service for camera phones, is another viable way to share your news stories with CNN. By including it as one of the services you are uploading to by e-mail, much of the work for filling in who it’s from can be done by the ShoZu template. This service is related to but not connected to I-Report so your chances of having your stories used may be slightly less.
